At Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™, we understand the challenges families face when searching for the right senior care provider for a loved one in need of personalized care, especially those living with Alzheimer’s disease or other dementia-related conditions. As of 2025, more than 810,000 residents live in assisted living facilities across the U.S., and over 40% of them are living with Alzheimer’s or another form of dementia.
The Purple Flag program was created in 2019 to serve both those living with dementia in residential settings such as traditional Assisted Living and those who require a secure setting with a higher quality of life that is inclusive to all seniors. Since then, our program has expanded to support individuals across all senior care settings, including hospice, home health and assisted living. We support our accredited partners in delivering the highest quality person-centered senior care. We know providers who demonstrate success with our rigorous accreditation requirements will make a profound difference in the quality of care and the quality of life for loved ones and families. In fact, there are 10 best practice program standards that senior care providers need to meet to become a Purple Flag™ accredited organization.
Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ is an accreditation program that sets the standards to enhance the quality of life for persons living with any form of dementia, including mild cognitive impairment or memory loss. The four care areas it provides accreditations to are: Memory Care (communities that have dedicated memory care units), Assisted Living, Home Care and Hospice Care. Purple Flag™ originated in 2019 through a collaboration between the Institute for Senior Living Education (ISLE) and the Connecticut Assisted Living Association (CALA). Upon approval, providers receive the distinctive Purple Flag as a symbol of their commitment to excellence in dementia care.
Our accredited care providers have compassionate staff who undergo training in person-centered memory care best practices that go beyond required standards. They work individually with residents to ensure each person receives the personalized care they need. Purple Flag Excellence in Dementia Care™ accredited organizations follow progressive care plans that incorporate family involvement and educational support to help loved ones better understand the effects of dementia. These care settings are more than memory care facilities. They are committed to creating safe, comfortable environments where residents are treated with dignity and respect, all while striving to enhance their quality of life.
